Virtual Training: building a Digital Workforce at Walmart

The World is rapidly evolving and the new environment requirements (industry, economy, new business models, analytics, digital platforms, uberization…) oblige companies to adapt their operating model to survive. The future workforce will be a mix of bots, external and internal talent that will face new roles and new needed skills.

Walmart, the retail behemoth from Beaverton, intensifies its efforts to take down Amazon (read more about Amazon vs Walmart). It´s the world’s largest company by revenue—over US$500 billion, according to Fortune Global 500 list in 2018—as well as the largest private employer in the world with 2.3 million employees. With such numbers, going digital is very expensive but evolving is the only option. Thereby, Walmart is betting on one of its most valuable assets: its people.

Walmart introduced in 2017, VR to the world of employee training and development by using the technology to upgrade training at Walmart Academies nationwide.

With the huge success of that program, the company is now providing Oculus VR headsets to all stores in the U.S. to bring the same level of training to more than 1 million Walmart associates.

Walmart plans to use VR to train associates in three main areas: new technology, soft skills like empathy and customer service, and compliance. In a society and economy, where speed is key, VR enables just-in-time trainning with no logistics expenses (teachers, trips, …). Associates can experiment a product before the product is introduced in stores and therefore, improve customer service and experience.
