Body Scanning in Fashion

Last May, the startup 3DLOOK won the third edition of LVMH Innovation awards. The benefits of artificial intelligence and augmented reality were discussed in previous posts, but technology is constantly improving and there is still a very important restriction when buying online: finding the right size. The goal is driving up conversions and reduce ecommerce returns and costs.

It´s difficult to categorize startups by technology because many of them are merging more than one. This is the case of the following ones, that were mentioned independently on post about AI, 3D Knitting or augmented reality.

For instance, I mentioned VIRTUSIZE is a virtual fitting solution that enables online fashion retailers to illustrate size and fit for consumers. As they mention, their solution has been developed alongside designers, pattern makers and industry leading online retailers who share our view that garment comparison is the only way to clearly and objectively showcase size and fit.

Then, TRUEFIT provides an online fit recommendation engine that helps consumers to find brands and new styles on the market. BODI.ME, has developed a unique algorithm that allows to predict accurate size. It also proposes to fashion brands to integrate visual digital tools to address fitting and styling, that Bodi.Me users can access with their login.

Back to 3DLOOK and as mentioned on LVMH press releases, the company was founded in 2016 in San Mateo, California, by Vadim Rogovskiy, Alex Arapov and Ivan Makeev, who created a way to measure the human body using only a smartphone. 3DLOOK developed a technology able to process and measure the human body from just two photos, using computer vision, machine learning and 3D matching.

Its solutions empower its customers – brands, retailers and e-commerce businesses – to deliver hyper-personalized customer experiences across all channels. On the one hand, customers will be able to know their right size and receive recommendations that better fit with their body shape. Customers can also create an avatar and use virtual dressing in augmented reality. On the other hand, companies will be able to gather and analyze data to improve product design, fit and sizing whilst reducing returns and increase sales.
